Why do we want the ending before the beginning and middle?
I got a new CD today, all the songs are in French, can’t understand a word of it, but find myself trying to sing along to it, dancing around the room to the music, tapping my foot in time to the rhythm, the woman could be singing about 3 elephants and a camel for all I know, I have no idea, the only words I know in French will get me fed on their delicious croissants washed down with coffee and wine, but I really like this CD.
But it did get me thinking, do we really have to understand everything so we can enjoy it. Sometimes intrigue just adds to the excitement.
I have many clients phone me and want to know where the relationship is going to go with the person they met just 1 day, 1 week, 1 month ago. What happened to letting things just happen in a natural way, when did we start wanting to know everything that the future holds for us, when did we start wanting to know the ending of the story to see if it was worth reading the beginning and middle of it? Why do we want to live in the future before we get there?
Yes it is good to know if something is going to happen that will throw us sideways or send us into a spin so we can be prepared for it. But you know if we try to stop bad things happening to us, we may just be depriving ourselves of a valuable lesson we need to learn.
So many people want to know if this relationship is the one, will it last, the thing is if you know where it’s going to go and it’s in the direction you want it to go, you may be in danger of trying to make it go there faster than it should, and that can completely turn the whole thing around, also looking too far ahead into the future means your attention is taken away from the here and now and who knows what you are missing.
If you try to cross a bridge before you come to it, you will have to cross it again when you get to it, and you may find you tried to cross the wrong bridge in the first place. Running before you walk will always have the result of you ending up scraping your knees.
One thing I always remind my clients is this, you can look to the future and decide how you are going to deal with it but you do that from the mindset you are in now, when you get there your mindset will probably have changed so chances are you will deal with it in a completely different way.
We shouldn’t always have to know the end so we can enjoy the beginning and middle, we shouldn’t always have to understand in great detail what is going on, what we should always know is that the present, the here and now is shaping us for the future.
