How To Cope If You Are Having A Mid-Life Crisis

Mid-Life Crisis although usually associated with males can also happen to females.  The symptoms are very similar to those of Andropause (Male menopause), but they seem to have a different effect, possibly because they are more likely to be caused by emotional or psychological turmoil than hormone imbalance.

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Reduced libido

Some believe the inability to deal with problems, the future, or if you have suffered a childhood trauma you are more likely to suffer from MLC.  It can also be caused by lack of sleep because as men get older they sleep less deeply and this can cause weight gain and lack of growth hormone.

MLC can occur in you 30s, 40s or 50s, if it happens around your 50s you may actually be suffering from Andropause so it is better if you have your progesterone levels checked.

Some man may feel a loss of masculinity due to changes I their libido which happen as they get older, this can lead to a realisation that they aren’t immortal and they begin to question their future role, it can also lead to the need to be more sexually active and in some men this causes then to seek new female company.

If you feel you are going through or starting to go through MLC there are things you can do to help you.

  • De-stressing treatment such as aromatherapy massage, yoga, exercise, meditation or other techniques that help you switch off.
  • Accept you are getting older, you values and goals will change.  Learn to accept these changes as the start of another chapter in life.  Rather than thinking you have to give things up look at different ways of doing them.
  • Talk through your problems with a close friend or ask your doctor to refer you to a counsellor or seek private counselling if you can afford it.  Often talking things through will give you the clarity you need and will certainly give you another point of view of your situation.
  • If depression is part of the symptoms a short course of anti-depressants can help get your equilibrium back so you can deal with the cause of the MLC
  • Eat regular healthy meals
  • Learn to balance work, rest, family and play. (Sometimes you end up in a vicious circle of being over tired from lack of sleep, you become irritable with your family who become irritable with you so you spend more time away from home with causes more friction and round and round you go.  Remember family is just as important as friends and work.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help there really is nothing wrong with admitting you are in crisis and it may save a lot of heartache and health problems if you do seek help.
