Choosing Mineral Makeup? Some Helpful Information

A bit ago another advisor wrote about questionable ingredients used by major cosmetic companies. She along with another lovely person was my inspiration to write this blog. Some may find this topic controversial as it express mostly opinion.  Many women use makeup to hide flaws, and enhance natural beauty. It is understandable that many wear makeup on a frequent basis when working in the public eye.

To keep from using makeup with harmful synthetic ingredients many women have started using mineral makeup. While some have had great success with their switch, others are having problems with breakouts, suddenly developing acne and rashes.

Not all mineral makeup is created equal.  There is no regulation of what constitutes mineral makeup. Any product containing minerals as a primary ingredient can be marketed as such, even if it contains a whole lot of other less natural ingredients. Many cosmetic companies that are advertising as “pure, natural and the like” are compromising quality for profit.

Some companies take care not to use synthetics (like paraben preservatives and other fillers) and stay true to the original intent of pure mineral makeup. While other cosmetic companies add fillers, colors, binders, preservatives, and other chemicals to their formulas. Do not be fooled by the terms all natural or pure mineral formula.

That's because within the brands that claim pure mineral formulations, there is still another category breakdown -- those that contain an arguably natural mineral known as bismuth oxycholoride, and those that do not.

Bismuth is a pearlizing agent that gives mineral makeup that candlelight glow, bismuth oxychloride is a mineral, but it's not found in the earth. Bismuth is a byproduct of lead and copper processing. Bismuth oxychloride is also frequently as a filling agent or as  binder and some say it comes with a heavy price.

"Bismuth oxychloride is considered a skin irritant and can cause itching and rashes and in large amounts it can cause cystic acne as well – it's one of the ingredients you should try to avoid if you have acne or rosacea or sensitive skin. Some products have this ingredient, while others do not.

Searching for mineral makeup that does not contain bismuth can be a rather daunting task. It is important to read labels carefully.

Below I list some makeup that I have found that does not contain bismuth.

Beelucious

This wonderful makeup can be purchased through Bee Royal Products website an eco friendly company.  They have a deluxe makeup kit with everything you need to look picture perfect at an economical price. Many other make up items can be purchased individually in many colors. Other fine skin care items, and supplements are also available. My personal favorite.

Repechage

Seaweed based treatment makeup that can be purchased directly through their website or fine spas and salons nationwide. They carry other seaweed based skincare items.

Dr. Hauska

An eco friendly all natural holistic skin care company that offers a variety of skin care and makeup items. Products can be found online through their website or select healthfood store nationwide.

AnneMarie Borlind

An eco friendly company that offers natural beauty products using unpoluted organic sources. Products can purchased directly or through select retailers.

Lauress

Company uses highest quality cosmetic and pharmaceutical grade mineral pigments. Products can be purchased directly though their website.

A quick note about nail polish. Nail polish also contains some questionable ingredients. Two brands off the top of my head that are considered more safe are Barielle and Peace Keeper.

Hi Lexy .. great post; thank you.  I've been using mineral make up for about a year now and really love it.  I use "Demure" minerals; they are out of Clearwater, FL.  I 'discovered' it at Sam's Club, of all places!  Have never had that 'itchy' feel, and it is so light, I can't even tell I am wearing makeup.  But ... user beware ... it is SO easy to put on too much.  I've noticed that less is better!

Thank you for the info on the nail polish too .. a girl just gotta be a girl, no matter how old we are !

Hugs

This is great info Lexy..thanks for sharing.  I was really appalled lately when I found out about the lead in lipstick and the leading manufacturers that promoted their products knowing that they were a danger to us.  I worry for my daughters but I use blush and eye shadow etc also and I found that I like a moisturizer that I make myself because I just don't want to buy products with questionable ingredients.  I applaud you for stepping out there and addressing this issue Lexy for it is info that we all need to be aware of.

Very interesting as I have gone into the 'green' so to speak in skin care.  There is so much that we do not truly know and you are so right!
Recently I purchased 'pure' fruit lipstick and even 2 months later have a rash around my lips especially at corners.  Nothing helps,..it just gets worse - and hurts, ever to eat.
So, yes, folks, be careful.  This was not a drugstore item (no offence to those either, just a statement) some are good I guess.
Anyway,  Anyone have any ideas about this lip rash?  You can emal me, if it shouldn't be on a post.  My doc gave me a 'fungal' cream.  That just made it worse!

Ladies, the things we go through to be pretty are many. I would have loved to have taken the time to list more good brands, and more bad ingredients. There are other ingredients cosmetic companies can and should start using. It is sad they choose sometimes the easiest and cheepest ingredients to make huge profits.

Rosie, I too have made soap, masks, and so forth. If you get some frankincense essential oil to go in that homemade cream, it will keep wrinkles away longer. Then for your next batch use rose and neroli. You can soak rosepetals in your oil to infuse the oil. Start this before you intend to make the batch. Homemade creams are the best kind. They are better for our skin, and less expensive than what you can find in the stores.

Dear Lexy,

I am so humbled that I inspired you!!!!
I just wanted ladies to know of dangerous cosmetics.

Do you know anything about Bare Essentials? I think they were the first to start all the rage.
I acctually am blessed and do not have to use hardly anymkae up!!! Hurray!,LOL ;O)
I use mascara and blush and lip gloss/lipstick and or eyeliner of want to bring my eyes out even more.

For gal with rash...hhhmmm let me see what i remeber from cosmetology school years ago. I would wash the area with the mildest soap, let it air dry as rubbing with towel could even worsen the area. Use a small amount of peroxide again air dry. Heck this may sound silly but you can even stain your lips naturally with fruit, and added benefit you can eat it after wards. yum!

Thanks again Lexy for info I am going to check out some of the sites you mentioned.
