Boundaries

How to keep healthy boundaries in your relationships

Do you take the Bait?

I started the newest little man in my life  ( Madra....Mah-Drah)   in Puppy Kindgarden today and saw how motivated he was by FOOD, and I was taught to use it to distract him because they sat a very attractive black lab female beside him in class and he was very anxious to play with his new friend...

And I realized while trying to control the little man, that other people and situations can cause us to react, and almost bait us into responding to their argumentative words and feed into their negativity, give them the attention and we have to learn not to respond when such things happen...

I for one will admit that I have done so and when the trainer taught me to not reward negative behavior and I have to learn to apply that to my own life on and off the computer. Let me tell you Madra soon caught on that as soon as he sat quietly and behaved like he was supposed to it was rewarded with some pretty tasty morsels.......

Given that I have four more weeks to go with this class, I am sure there is more for me to learn :-)

Wishing you all a good day.

Dear Joan:

What a great post!  I am looking forward to seeing the progress you and Madrah make in the future.  We should have had Chewy our English Cocker taught by a professional for he is a cantankerous spoiled old man who owns us.  He gets everything he wants and blackmails us by looking so cute.  He is disobedient and at times downright hateful.  My daughter calls him "the dog from hell" and I think she might have him pegged quite well.  He only minds my husband, treats me with icy stares when I sit in my husband's chair but all in all shows me he loves me by tolerating me.  I know you and Madrah are off to a grand start.  I agree with you totally about rewarding bad behavior for it is never satisfactory to do so.

Madra ( which means dog in Irish) is a pure bred field spaniel, his mother is a champion as is his father, and we plan on showing him.
I wanted to start him last month but I was away and the same person has to be there every week with him :-)
