Update on Ellie Mae...

Ellie Mae is home now and resting comfortably in her bed w/heating pad, monkey, & blankie.  Although all the testing turned out normal, the ER vet wanted to continue with some 'new' testing methods involving a specialist...to the tune of about $1,000!!!  My daughter sternly informed the vet that we would be taking her home with us and to give her some seizure medication.  The vet did agree that Ellie Mae had a seizure and is most likely has canine epilepsy; but she wants to know 'why'.  That's fine, but she can pay the cost of extra testing to find out 'why'...in my humble opinion. :)

We will take her in for a follow up in a week or so, unless she has a serious relapse, then we will take her in sooner.  But she is on seizure medication now and resting after this ordeal.  My own feeling is that now we know what we are dealing with, we will be better equip to deal with it.

Thanks to everyone for your prayers, well wishes, and concerns.  See?  Prayer does work! :)

my Samoyed had seizures and we really never knew why. She started her seizures when she was older and right after an infestation of ticks and fleas. The vet had thought it was caused by this. (she was a stray and had tons of ticks) She was on seizure medication but on occation she would still have them... She still lived a normal happy life. Just learn to cope with them. Its scary when you see it happening but you help them through it and they are fine. Best of luck! Glad she is home

My mom has a precious yorkie who has had elilepsy since a puppy. She's been on phenobarbitol twice a day practically her entire life and is still. The seizures were truly horrible and frequent:((( mom spent a lot of money for a specialist who didn't have anything to say basically and didn't return my moms phone calls after spending so much money. She didn't even know what kind of tests were done. Then the seizures stopped for years nothing. Remember the pet food scare earlier this year? My mom worried about the gluten and freaked out and changed the dog's diet and started making her own dog food (beef, rice and green beans) and then about a mnth later the seizures started again after years of nothing. Mom thought she was allergic to the new food regimen because she also developed a bad itch so her regular  vet did some allergy tests and found she has certain allergies. One is to "cat" of all things and there is a new cat in the neighborhood who spends time in the yard.now my mom only let's the dog out in a small portion of the yard to piddle and hasn't had another seizure.
She's still on her meds.good luck with your dog. Don't spend a lot on a specialist just yet, maybe test her for allergies.

I had a mal Maltese who had a few seizures and we never really knew why.  I suspect one was because of an ear infection combined with an overzealous groomer.

I am so glad Ellie Mae is home, she is such a precious little angel.

I am sorry, I didn't read your earlier bog re your dog had its shots.
Omg it is probably a bad reaction to the shots and its just a little dog!!! I had a kitten back in 1986 who nearly died from his vaccinations. He had them in the afternoon. I went to work at 6 came home at 11 and was "sweating" and drooling and listless. Rushed him tot the er vet and they kept him for 2 days gave him fluid iv. He had fluid in his lungs and I had to give him med for a week. He totally recovered. BUT he ALWAYS had a bad reaction to his vaccinations after that tho not as dramatic. The vet didn't give him the four in one type shot after that. There is some kind of milder thing they can give pets. . I think we as people are over vaccinated too!!!!!! People claim they get ms from shots rec'd in childhood. Our bodies are all different and goes for animals too, especially the toy breeds, they are so tiny!!!!  Maybe your dog doesn't even need antiseizure med. If you have a regular vet you feel comfortable with ask them if it could have been a reaction to the shots. My gut tells me that's what it was!!!! You can check it out on google too lots of info on over-vaccinating. Good luck. We love our fur kids so!!!! Just imagine a world without them, it would be crappy lol

Thanks for sharing so much with me!  Although Ellie Mae didn't show the normal type reaction to her shots, she did experience a grand mal seizure.  Multi-shots can be a trigger for seizures in dogs with canine epilepsy.

I believe she has had smaller seizures before and we didn't realize what it was. Combine that with all her test coming out normal, I do believe she has canine epilepsy and having all her shots at once brought on this major seizure.

She is still woozy from all the meds & we gave her the first dose of anti-seizure meds which causes drowsiness for the first couple days.  But she just ate some food--I spooned fed her, and took some water.  So, I think with some rest, her meds, and lots of TLC she will make a full recovery.

She may have to be on anti-seizure meds for some time, but you can bet your sweet butt that I will make sure any vet that touches her is aware of this! :)

Thanks again for sharing, and for your concern--like I said in earlier blog, for such a tiny thing (2.9 pounds now), she sure has wiggled her way into our hearts! :)

Have a wonderful night!
